About Communities of Practice

Communities of Practice are networks of people with common issues or problems who get together - physically and/or virtually - to identify common solutions, explore new ways of working and share knowledge and ideas.

Communities of Practice for Local Government is an online platform provided by us in partnership with the IDeA. It provides groups with a set of collaboration tools within a secure environment to help them work together more effectively. These tools include:

Hundreds of groups are already using the communities platform. You can search for one that interests you or set up your own.

IS Guidance

As well as providing the online platform for communities of practice, we provide guidance to people on how to set up and use a community, and on getting the most out of your community.

You can access our guidance for community members and facilitators, plus some useful resources for facilitators, through the left-hand menu. There is also lots more information in our Communities of Practice Library.

Workshops

We are planning a series of workshops for community of practice facilitators in 2010. These will provide hands-on training on using the online platform, plus lots of advice, hints and tips on engaging your members and building a vibrant online community. We will post more information on this site when it is available.

If you have any questions about communities of practice or need further information, please email communities@improvementservice.org.uk.
