This report summarises the findings of a survey of support services in West Dunbartonshire for children and young people experiencing domestic abuse. The report includes accounts from children, young people and their mothers of living with domestic abuse in the west of Scotland in the 21st century. The report also includes the views of service providers and the results of a survey of secondary school pupils on the support they feel would help children in this situation.

The analysis of existing services is informed by the best evidence from the literature on domestic abuse and combines Judith Herman's three stage trauma model with the principles of best practice recommended by Cunningham and Baker 2004.

The report recommends a coordinated community-based service delivery framework which is trauma-informed, appropriate to the age and stage of development of the child or young person, incorporates an assessment of the risk to the children and their mothers from the perpetrator of domestic abuse and involves joint working to minimise the impact of co-occuring adversities in the child or young person's life{mosimage}.
