The training and development of graduate planners is an issue of concern to many employers and stakeholders in the planning community. Working through the Scottish Planning Education Forum (SPEF), the Improvement Service is supporting the identification and implementation of improvements in the current approach across all sectors of planning employers. In 2007/08 research into the current approach to graduate training and development was funded through the Planning Development Programme. Following the publication of the results of this research, the next steps in the project will be to identify interested employers and an appropriate forum for developing, agreeing and implementing improvement. A work shadowing scheme has been established in partnership with Homes for Scotland. The scheme promotes short term placements between planning authorities and development companies, and is intended to encourage greater understanding between authorities and developers of the aims, priorities and working practices in both organisations.
