Welcome to the Local Government Health Improvement Programme of NHS Health Scotland.

Councils are in a unique position to significantly contribute to the reduction of health inequalities by improving the life circumstances of the communities they serve. Recognising this significant contribution that councils play in health improvement in Scotland, Health Scotland has created a Local Government Programme. The programme will be instrumental in further developing relationships and health improvement activity with COSLA and other national local government organizations and agencies, all 32 councils and Community Planning Partnerships.

This site is for all those within local government who have an interest and role in improving health. We hope you find lots of useful information to support health improvement activity in your area.

Do you have any case studies, research or examples of promising practice from local initiatives that you would like to share with your local authority community? Please send your articles of interest, particularly in the areas of healthy city initiatives, housing and regeneration, environmental health, trading standards, development and sustainability, Joint Futures, and staff health and well being to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it   the Local Government Health Improvement Programme Manager.

Review of the Scottish Diet Action Plan
The Scottish Diet Action Plan (SDAP) was launched in July 1996. It set out a series of 71 recommendations for action to improve the diets of Scots and established a series of dietary targets for achievement by 2005. In September 2006, Health Scotland published the SDAP Review report that examined the progress, impacts, successes and challenges that arose from the implementation of the 1996 Scottish Diet Action Plan. The 71 SDAP recommendations have been the basis on which food and health action in Scotland has been shaped over the last ten years. The review report explained that the last decade saw a major shift in food production and attitudes to diet and health, causing a considerable impact on shopping, buying and eating patterns. For a better diet to be achieved, the report suggests that changes are required across the supply chain and into many policy areas, which shape what people eat, where and when and how it is produced. ...
