Learning and development priorities and opportunities

E-mail Print PDF

Over the next 12-18 months the Planning Development Programme (PDP) will work with the RTPI Scotland and other stakeholders to support six common learning and development priorities for Leaders, Elected Members and Planners. Summaries of the shared learning and development priorities, along with learning outcomes for each audience, is available to download.

We have also agreed that the learning and development programme should:

  • utilise existing opportunities and resources where possible. The approach taken must not overlap or duplicate the work undertaken locally by planning authorities or nationally by other organisations.
  • make learning and development opportunities accessible to all authorities
  • offer some development opportunities to a wider audience than planning authority staff, for example roads colleagues, agency staff or developers
  • encourage cascading of learning possibly through a "train the trainer" approach
  • provide different types of learning opportunities to meet different learning styles for example, a web-based/e-learning approach so that individuals can choose when to carry out training and complete it at their own pace
  • encourage a local delivery approach – possibly in conjunction with RTPI regional chapters and through video conferencing
  • seek professional accreditation for learning and development opportunities where appropriate.

Programme of learning and development opportunities

With the learning priorities approach in mind we have prepared a programme of forthcoming learning and development opportunities showing how they match the learning priorities. This programme will be updated every couple of months so that training opportunities can be planned for. Future updates will also include RTPI Scotland Regional Chapter events.
