Council chiefs in East Renfrewshire are bidding for the area to be made a test bed in a drive to cut red tape and deliver better services to residents.

Councillors have given the go-ahead to place a bid with the Scottish Executive for the Council to be allowed to negotiate a local outcome agreement. This would cut the number of complex bids the Council currently has to make for cash for areas such as regeneration and community safety from five to just one.

A successful bid would see the Scottish Executive signing off one deal covering off all parts of community planning and leaving the Council free to deliver. Lessons learned would be shared with other Scottish councils.

Council leader, Councillor Jim Fletcher, said, "We hope we are successful in this trailblazing bid to streamline the way we do business with the Scottish Executive on community planning. The real benefit is that our residents would see quicker progress in areas such as improving community safety and boosting local health."
