Edinburgh's groundbreaking interactive safety centre, 'The Risk Factory', has achieved 'Secured By Design' status. The award is a UK Police initiative acknowledging the efforts made to design out crime.

Architects worked alongside Police and the Council in designing the building at Chesser, applying crime prevention measures and security standards. From the outset the aim was to make the safety and security of staff a priority. This kind of approach has been proven to reduce household robberies by up to 75%.

'The Risk Factory' is the first building of its kind in Scotland, where a village has been created inside a warehouse to raise awareness of safety issues in the local community.

Chief Superintendent Colin Campbell said: 'We are pleased the hard work which has gone into the design of this building has been recognised. Designing out crime is a relatively simple concept which has staggering results, and this award proves it's worth the extra effort at the design stage.'
