Two major events were held in December: The biannual meeting of the Scottish Gazetteer Community, closely followed by the first meeting of the new National Gazetteer Project Board. Both events presented an opportunity to reflect on the past year's successes and set out the priorities for 2008. See the relevant News items on this page for more details.
One of the major concerns for 2008 is how to meet increasing demands for gazetteer data and services - both locally and nationally. On behalf of the Project Board, FVGIS will survey local authorities in early 2008 to gather information on gazetteer resource issues and other risks to national projects.
Although the National Infrastructure is not yet live, the National Gazetteer is being refreshed with the latest local authority data to ensure currency, update quality statistics, and to streamline data supply and load processes. At the moment, full data loads are working smoothly and most local authorities are able to supply weekly change update files. A number of national technical issues have prevented the successful loading of these weekly change files and a top priority is to get this working in early 2008 so that load times and quality feedback turnarounds are reduced.
The National Gazetteer Project Board reviewed project briefs for two new projects: BS7666:2006 Migration and Gazetteer-Assessors Integration. The Board has given the go-ahead for initial work on both projects: the development of high level Requirements Specification and Technical Options reports for the BS7666:2006 Migration project and the development of a Business Case for the Gazetteer-Assessors Integration project. This initial work will be carried out in January and February 2008.
