The shortlist for the Herald Society Awards 2008, which aim to recognise the best in the public and voluntary sectors has been announced.
Among the shortlisted entries for the 2008 awards are an innovative hospital recycling project, a Children's Orchard, and a unique approach to tackling graffiti.
The awards, which are in their first year, aim to recognise the efforts and contributions of workers in the public and voluntary sectors. They will highlight some of the work taking place throughout Scotland to improve the lives of individuals and communities.
The Improvement Service is sponsoring the award for 'Best Practice Initiative of the Year'. The shortlisted entries in this category are:
- Glasgow Community and Safety Services, for the Graffiti Removal Service initiative to overcome the fact deprived communities tend to tolerate more graffiti and report it less.
- Scottish Drugs Forum, for the Addiction Workers' Training Project which supports former drug service users to help train others.
- Strathclyde Fire and Rescue for the Junior Fire Reach - a Saturday club which offered young people in Easterhouse the chance to train with local firefighters.
- The Rock Trust, for the Scottish Social Networks Project which puts relationships and friendships at the heart of changing young lives.
The full shortlist for all categories can be found on The Herald website.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Glasgow on 26 November 2008.
