Update on IS support for communities of practice

A paper detailing the Improvement Service's support for communities of practice, how it has developed since the IS' early days and plans for the future is now available.

As our Knowledge Management approach indicates we believe that communities of practice are a key tool for sharing knowledge, expertise and experience across Scottish councils. To help with this we currently provide an online collaboration space to over 40 Scottish groups (and growing) through its partnership with the IDeA. These groups include, amongst others, networks of people across Scottish local government and its partners who are involved with Single Outcome Agreements, Efficient Government, customer satisfaction with local government, knowledge management, managing contact centres and collaborative gain.

The strategic and practical changes which led from the type and availability of support offered from the first year of the IS' existence, when only five communities were supported, to the current partnership with the IDeA are detailed within the paper. It also provides information about our support for community facilitators and our part in ongoing research into the benefits of and success factors for communities of practice.

A copy of the update is in our knowledge management document library. Further information about communities of practice and a full list of the communities we support can be found in our Communities section.
