A new, integrated service for children with additional needs is being launched by Scottish Borders Council.

The new service sees workers from Education and Social Work departments working together to deliver an integrated service from five local centres.

The new structure is being implemented following a comprehensive review of children's services in 2008. The process of integration has involved the redeployment of more than 470 staff, including Special and Behavioural Needs Teachers, Additional Needs Assistants (ANAs), Family Support Workers, Social Workers and senior staff.

The aims of the new structure are:

  • to deliver better co-ordination and integrated support to children, young people and families
  • to offer the best possible support to the most vulnerable children
  • to provide better protection for children.
