This website is operated by the Improvement Service.


When you use the website, we collect certain information or data about you. This includes:


  • Your IP address and hostname
  • Your web browser version
  • The pages you visit
  • The previous website address from which you reached us, including any search terms used
  • Other information submitted in forms, for example your email address when you subscribe to a newsletter.


We DO NOT collect any personal data, apart from information that you volunteer, e.g. when you fill in a form on our site. When you do that, we will only use the information for the purpose you provide it.


What do we use the information for?


We use the data we collect to:


  • improve the site by monitoring how you use it
  • respond to any feedback you send us, if you’ve asked us to
  • send you our newsletter(s), if you have subscribed


We will only use the information for the purposes specified. We will never attempt to identify individual visitors to the site, nor associate the technical data collected with any individual. We will never pass the information and data we collect to a third party, unless we are legally obliged to.




We use Mailchimp to provide our email newsletters as its service is widely used and trusted, as well providing value for money. Mailchimp is part of the US Safe Harbor Scheme  - a scheme run by the US government which ensures that data is protected to the same level as it would be in the UK. Subscription to email newsletters is voluntary and you can unsubscribe to our newsletters at any time.

Providing Twitter feeds

On a number of pages (e.g. News, Welfare Reform, Planning Skills) we provide a feed from our Twitter accounts. These require a cookie to operate. If you do not accept cookies, the feed will not display.



We use a number of sites such as YouTube and Vimeo to provide videos on some pages of the site. These sites may set cookies when you visit these pages.
