Consultation

Consultation is undertaken by or on behalf of the council for a number of reasons:

  • to find out what users think
  • to identify priorities and concerns
  • to meet statutory obligations

How do we know the consultation is credible ?

Brighton & Hove City Council have been at the forefront of raising standards in local authority consultation through the Research and Consultation Project Approval Process, outlining the principles that underpin the council's consultation work. One of the primary ways we consult with the public is through the Citizens' Panel (Xchange).

What happens to the results ?

The results of consultation are expected to be fed back to those responsible for delivering a service and those responsible for decision making. Usually a report is written based on the findings of the consultation, which is then presented to either the relevant committee, The Management Team within the council or those working within the service of interest.

Does it make a difference ?

The 'Past Consultation' table demonstrates what consultation has been conducted by or on behalf of the council over the last five years. The individual project pages (which can be accessed by clicking on the titles) provide some information about what happened to the results, where findings influenced any change in service or policy, and where possible, provides access to the reports.
  • findings help providers and decision makers understand what users think of their service and whether they could be doing anything differently.
  • findings on consultation on less service specific topics can and do help decision makers determine what the priorities and concerns are of residents within the city for a range of issues and use this information to help them design policy or focus resources.
  • the results of consultation provide only part of the information upon which decisions are made, such things as resource constraints and competing demands also influence.
