Stirling launches volunteering web page to support communities

Stirling Council and Stirlingshire Voluntary Enterprise (SVE) has created a webpage giving community groups, individuals and businesses the opportunity to offer support to those most in need during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

The Council and SVE continues to receive an unprecedented number of enquiries from residents, local groups and organisations seeking guidance on how to support vulnerable people and keep them safe during the COVID-19 outbreak.

The page – at www.investinstirling.com/key-sectors/volunteering - allows communities groups and individuals to register their interest and help the local authority to co-ordinate the influx of support offers coming in from across the Stirling area.

Initially the Council and SVE are looking primarily for volunteers to undertake the roles below, although there will be a range of additional requirements emerging:

  • Befrienders to stay in touch with people over the telephone or using technology
  • Volunteer drivers
  • Volunteers to assist with essential groceries and collecting prescriptions
  • Volunteers to assist with food preparation for vulnerable people.

The Council is working closely with its national partners, communities and third sector organisations to ensure that everyone in Stirling has access to the local support they need to get through this challenging period.

Stirling Council Leader, Cllr Scott Farmer, said: “We work closely with Stirlingshire Voluntary Enterprise, the volunteering agency in the Stirling area, to connect people with volunteering opportunities that will make a big difference.  It’s vital that we make sure the right help gets to the right people at the right time. In this ever-changing environment we’re ensuring that we capture every single offer of help available and get it directly to the most vulnerable. Anyone who can offer support and help should register online”.

Convener of the Community Planning & Regeneration Committee, Cllr Chris Kane, said: “Having a clear and central overview of all available support allows us to ensure we can support those most in need with timely and suitable volunteer support. This approach also ensures that the health of volunteers, and those they are there to support, is protected at all times.

“We have been blown away by the response from our citizens, communities, local industry and third sector organisations who have demonstrated loudly and clearly that community spirit is alive and well right across Stirling.”

Natalie Masterson, Chief Executive of Stirlingshire Voluntary Enterprise said: “The voluntary sector has jumped into action to support Stirling’s most vulnerable citizens, with many organisations adapting their services and activities to meet the needs of the community during the crisis.

“They need volunteers desperately at this time, if you can volunteer to help your community tackle COVID 19, please do.”
