Routes to Leadership

The RCP offers a short course for aspiring Roads Managers. The course involves networking with peers, contributions from roads industry experts and guest speakers who are leaders in the public sector. The course aims to provide roads managers with an understanding of what is required when leading a diverse workforce, planning budgets, engaging with the community and elected members and representing roads at council committee meetings.

Apprenticeships and work-based learning in roads authorities

The RCP has forged closer links with universities and colleges across Scotland offering civil engineering as a workplace learning opportunity. The new graduate apprenticeships allow those pursuing a career in civil engineering to complete an honours level degree at university whilst learning the role at their roads authority. The new foundation apprenticeships allow school pupils who wish to pursue a career in civil engineering, access work-based learning placements while studying their Highers at school alongside civil engineering at college.

Developing the young workforce and ICE

The RCP is building relationships with Developing the Young Workforce officers across Scotland to help roads employers communicate the benefits of a roads or civil engineering career to the next generation. This involves RCP and roads professionals attending school career events, visiting schools and giving demonstrations, producing webinars for teachers and offering marketplace opportunities. The RCP aims to work in partnership with the Institution of Civil Engineers to deliver best practice and high quality opportunities for children and young people to experience the world of engineering.

Roads staff training

The RCP encourage and support a collaborative approach to the administration and delivery of staff training, including pooling of resources and expertise across partner authorities. We have conducted a Roads Staff Training Survey to determine existing training provision and how it can be improved and tailored to meet the needs of each authority. A working group has been set up to take this work forward, led by the RCP and key industry stakeholders.
