Simple terms explainer
Councils must provide Educational Maintenance Grants (EMGs) to former looked-after young people. This means that young people who were in care and are continuing their education—typically in college or vocational training—can receive financial support to help with learning costs such as books, travel, or equipment. The aim is to reduce barriers to education, support positive outcomes, and give care-experienced young people the same opportunities as others.
