Simple terms explainer

When a building is assessed as dangerous, councils have a duty to act to protect the public from harm. This includes taking steps to prevent access not only to the building itself, but also to nearby streets, footpaths, or public spaces that may be affected by the building’s condition. Actions can include erecting fencing or barriers, closing roads or pavements, installing warning signage, or taking other temporary safety measures. These powers are used in situations where there is a real risk to people’s safety and where the building owner has failed to take timely or effective action.
