Simple terms explainer

Councils are required to actively promote and support allotments, community gardens, and other “grow‑your‑own” initiatives. They must prepare a Local Food Growing Strategy to identify suitable land, maintain waiting lists, ensure waiting times remain reasonable, and take steps to reduce those lists—particularly where demand is high. Councils must also plan to expand access in areas facing social or economic challenges and may delegate management, set fair rents, and ensure appropriate regulations are in place. Where waiting lists exceed a defined threshold, councils must take reasonable steps to provide additional allotments.
