Simple terms explainer:

Councils must manage the Scottish Milk and Healthy Snack Scheme by registering eligible childcare settings, providing upfront funding, and supporting them to deliver daily portions of milk (or approved alternatives) and healthy snacks to pre-school children. This includes keeping track of which settings are participating, processing payments, and ensuring records like orders and receipts are kept for monitoring purposes. While settings don’t need to submit receipts regularly, they must retain them in case they’re selected for review. Councils must ensure the food and drink provided in schools meets strict nutritional standards. Meals should include plenty of fruit and vegetables, wholegrains, and healthy proteins, while limiting things like sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats. Schools must follow these rules whether they’re serving breakfast, lunch, snacks, or drinks.
