Simple terms explainer:
Councils must ensure that all school transport drivers and escorts who work directly with children are members of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme. This is a legal requirement for anyone doing regulated work with children, such as supervising or transporting them to and from school. Councils are responsible for processing PVG applications or confirming membership, and for issuing ID badges once checks are complete. These badges help identify approved staff and ensure children are transported safely by vetted individuals. From April 2025, PVG membership will be mandatory by law for all such roles
