Councils must support the preservation and promotion of the Gaelic language and take steps to increase awareness, availability, and participation in Gaelic education. This includes working with Bòrd na Gàidhlig to develop and implement Gaelic Language Plans where required and publicising parents’ rights to request Gaelic-medium primary education. Where Gaelic-medium or Gaelic learner education is provided, councils must take reasonable steps to ensure teachers have the training, opportunities, and resources needed to deliver it effectively, and that pupils have the resources needed to participate and benefit. Councils should also encourage the use and visibility of Gaelic through education, services, signage, and cultural activities, helping to protect and grow the language as part of Scotland’s heritage and identity.
