Simple terms explainer:
Local authorities must work to improve the quality of education in their schools and early learning and childcare (ELC) provision. This includes regularly reviewing performance, supporting teachers and staff, and making changes to improve learning experiences and outcomes for children. As part of this duty, local authorities must work towards continuous improvement across both school and ELC settings. This includes updating teaching and care practices, providing training, responding to inspection findings, and working with parents and communities. Local authorities also have a key role in supporting improvement in ELC delivered both directly and through funded providers, ensuring consistent quality across the wider local ELC system.
