Simple terms explainer

Councils can take action when a home is in very poor condition and not safe to live in. If a property is below the legal "tolerable standard"—meaning it doesn’t meet basic requirements for safe and healthy living—the council can issue a Closing Order to stop people from living there, or a Demolition Order to have the building taken down. These steps are taken to protect people’s health and safety and to make sure housing in the area is safe and fit to live in.
