Simple terms explainer
When writing big-picture planning documents, like the Local Development Plan that guides where housing, jobs and services should go, they must carry out a Sustainability Appraisal (which includes a Strategic Environmental Assessment). This looks at the likely environmental, social and economic impacts of different options before a plan is agreed, including in relation to archaeology. When it comes to deciding individual planning applications for large or sensitive developments, the authority may also require an Environmental Impact Assessment. This is a detailed study of how a specific project could affect things like wildlife, air quality, water, and local communities.
