Simple terms explainer
Councils are required to identify parts of its area that have special architectural or historic interest and where it is desirable to preserve or enhance their character. These areas must be formally designated as conservation areas. When a new designation is made, the council must notify Scottish Ministers and Historic Environment Scotland. In considering planning applications submitted in relation to conservation areas, special attention must be paid to the desirability of preserving or enhancing the character or appearance of that area.
