Simple terms explainer

If a tree or group of trees is especially important for wildlife, local history, amenity, or the character of an area, the council can place a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) on them. A TPO makes it illegal to cut down, uproot, top, lop or damage protected trees without permission. This duty exists to safeguard important trees so they continue to benefit nature, local landscape quality, and the wellbeing of the community.
