Simple terms explainer
Local authorities are required to prepare a Local Development Plan (LDP) for their area at least once every 10 years. The Council must review the plan regularly and consult with the Scottish Ministers at key stages before it can be officially adopted. They must also align with national goals, including targets for reducing carbon emissions and supporting sustainable development. The LDP must cover housing, the physical, cultural, economic, social, built heritage and environmental characteristics of the area, land uses in the area, population characteristics, housing needs, land available for housing, land for resettlement, health needs, education needs, details on depopulation, cultural facilities, infrastructure, provision of public toilets, provision of water refill locations.
