Simple terms explainer
Councils can issue a Building Preservation Notice if a building is at risk of being altered or demolished and is thought to have special historic or architectural value. This temporarily protects the building by treating it as listed while Historic Environment Scotland decides whether to give it formal listed status. The notice helps prevent irreversible changes during the assessment period.
