Simple terms explainer

Councils must ensure that furniture and furnishings sold to consumers meet legal safety requirements. This includes checking that products such as sofas, armchairs, cushions, mattresses and other upholstered furnishings comply with flammability standards, carry the required safety labels, and meet applicable product safety requirements. Councils can inspect retailers and suppliers, take samples for testing, remove non-compliant products from sale, and take enforcement action where necessary.
