Simple terms explainer

Councils must ensure that personal protective equipment (PPE) sold to consumers complies with legal safety requirements. PPE includes products designed to protect people from health and safety risks, such as safety helmets, protective eyewear, gloves, high-visibility clothing, respiratory protective equipment and protective footwear. Councils check that PPE meets essential health and safety requirements, carries the required conformity markings, is accompanied by the appropriate technical documentation and instructions, and performs as intended. Councils can inspect products, investigate complaints, remove unsafe or non-compliant products from sale, and take enforcement action where necessary.
