Simple terms explainer
Local authorities must enforce legislation that prohibits unfair commercial practices, including misleading actions, misleading omissions, and aggressive practices that distort or are likely to distort consumers’ purchasing decisions. This includes ensuring that traders do not provide false information, withhold material information, exploit consumer vulnerabilities through undue influence, or threaten action that cannot legally be taken. Certain practices are prohibited in all circumstances, such as publishing fake consumer reviews or falsely claiming membership of a recognised Code of Conduct.
