Simple terms explainer
Local authorities must enforce legislation protecting copyright, registered designs, and other intellectual property rights by investigating the misuse of protected creative works. This includes taking action where goods infringe copyright or copy a registered design, and addressing practices such as the sale of imitation or “look‑alike” products, commonly referred to as passing off. Trading Standards Officers have powers to inspect premises, investigate complaints, and seize infringing goods where offences are identified.
