Simple terms explainer
Councils must ensure that electrical plugs, sockets, adaptors and certain electrical appliances supplied to consumers comply with legal safety requirements. This includes checking that products are correctly designed, manufactured and labelled, and that they comply with BS1363 for electrical safety. Councils can inspect products, investigate complaints, carry out sampling and testing, require unsafe or non-compliant products to be withdrawn from sale, and take enforcement action where necessary.
