Simple terms explainer
Councils must ensure that recreational craft, personal watercraft and certain related equipment placed on the market comply with legal safety requirements. This includes checking that boats, jet skis, engines and specified components meet essential safety, environmental and construction standards, are appropriately labelled and accompanied by the required technical documentation. Trading Standards teams can investigate complaints, inspect products, require non-compliant craft to be withdrawn from sale, and take enforcement action where safety requirements are not met.
