Simple terms explainer
Councils must ensure that consumer products containing nickel comply with legal restrictions designed to protect people from allergic reactions and other health risks. This includes checking products such as jewellery, earrings, watches, clothing fasteners, spectacle frames and other items intended for prolonged skin contact. Trading Standards teams can inspect products, arrange testing, investigate complaints, require non-compliant products to be removed from sale, and take enforcement action where legal limits on nickel release are exceeded.
