Local authorities must enforce hallmarking requirements for items made of gold, silver, platinum, and palladium that exceed the prescribed weight thresholds. This includes ensuring that items are properly hallmarked by an authorised Assay Office before being offered for sale, confirming the metal’s fineness (for example 9ct, 18ct, or 24ct gold). Trading Standards Officers have powers to inspect premises, investigate complaints, and take enforcement action where precious metal goods are misdescribed or sold without the required hallmark.
