Simple terms explainer
Local authorities must enforce legislation requiring goods offered for sale to be clearly price‑marked so that the selling price is easily visible to consumers without the need to ask. Where goods are sold by reference to quantity, councils must ensure that a unit price (for example, price per kilogram) is displayed to allow consumers to compare prices easily. All prices displayed must be inclusive of VAT. Trading Standards Officers are responsible for monitoring compliance and taking enforcement action where pricing requirements are not met.
