Simple terms explainer
Councils must ensure that consumer products sold to the public are safe, even where there is no specific legislation governing that type of product. This includes monitoring products for safety risks, investigating complaints and incidents, carrying out inspections and testing activities, and taking enforcement action where unsafe products are identified. Councils can require products to be withdrawn from sale, issue warnings, and work with national regulators to address risks.
