Lilyhill Gardens in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire is a new assisted living development designed to support the needs and provide accommodation for adults with complex learning and physical disabilities; and is the product of co-ordinated partnership working between Housing Services, the Health and Social Care Partnership and the voluntary sector.
Key Activities
The apartments at Lilyhill Gardens have been designed to be bright and modern, with amenities such as wet floor showers, rise and fall kitchen units in wheelchair accessible accommodation, an enclosed private garden, a secure door entry system with fob access, and 24 hour on site support with additional links to the Council’s award winning Risk Management Centre. All of the apartments are accessed from an “internal street” which has a single point of public entry and exit for added security.
The building has been designed to be energy efficient and the internal street has been formed with full height south facing glazing panels over two storeys. All apartments have been installed with telecare systems which can be adapted to suit individual need. This development forms part of the Council’s Strategic Local Housing Programme which supports a commitment to providing affordable housing as well as promoting town centre living. Developments such as Lilyhill reflect the commitment to support people with additional support needs to live in their local community with sustainable support from health and care services, in an environment that promotes social interaction and gives the individuals and their families confidence that support will be available as and when required.
Benefits and Impact
It is anticipated that Lilyhill Gardens will deliver annual recurring savings of around £0.200m. In addition, there is also a significant element of cost avoidance with a number of residents new to the social work service, who otherwise would have required considerably more expensive care packages to have been put in place.
Learning
The new apartments have transformed the lives of many of the residents. Through Self Directed Support, each tenant has the scope to make their own choices about what they do with their lives during the day and how they want their own care arranged. In this way, tenants are enjoying greater freedom than they have done previously, whilst retaining the security of support whenever it is required.
