20 years of the Improvement Service

The IS is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2025 and throughout the year, we're reflecting on our achievements and our impact on communities across Scotland.

Established on 27 July 2005 with just a handful of staff, we now have over 100 people driving digital innovation, spearheading climate action across local government, and pioneering data-driven decisions, as well as providing leadership development.

To mark the anniversary, our Chief Executive Sarah Gadsden spoke with Scottish Local Authority News about how the IS is driving meaningful change in Scotland and you can read her interview here.

You can also read Sarah’s take on the past two decades and find out more about our 20 Years, 20 Successes campaign.

Over the past year we have collected testimonials and reflections from our staff and from our partners. These capture the ethos of the organisation and its commitment to improving public services for the communities of Scotland.

20 years of partnerships

As part of our 20-year anniversary, we spoke with our partner organisations to see what they had to say about working with the IS.
