Culture for Climate Scotland and the Improvement Service have developed a sprint training programme to empower local authority officers to use cultural and creative practices in the delivery of their work to help create a more sustainable future.

Working with arts and culture offers many opportunities to advance work on climate change adaptation, mitigation and the just transition, and this programme will provide both training and bespoke advice to help participants to develop work in this area.

Feedback from the first year of the course showed that 100% of participants strongly agreed that they got new skills or knowledge, 100% agreed that the course was enjoyable, and 84% agreed that it would help them to do new things in their job role. We have now further updated the course design in response to feedback to make it as useful as possible and are delighted to be offering it for a second time.

Who is it for?

The programme is open to any local authority officer who feels it will make a difference in the delivery of their role. This is likely to be those working in climate change adaptation or mitigation, just transition planning, community development, economic development or arts and culture, but other areas will be relevant too.

Learning outcomes

  • Broaden your understanding of the varied ways that arts, culture and creative practices can help to deliver on sustainability priorities.
  • Develop practical knowledge of how to work with arts, culture and creative practices, and learn about resources that are available to support this.
  • Gain skills and resources to help you work through a climate change challenge of relevance to your role and work and develop a project proposal for how to address it.
  • Develop your knowledge in understanding and evaluating the impact of arts and cultural projects, and how to communicate this to decision makers and stakeholders.

Delivery

The programme is delivered via Teams by members of Culture for Climate Scotland and input from artists and other experts in the field. There are six hours of contact time as outlined below and an expectation of six hours of individual work between sessions.

When signing up participants are asked to submit a climate change- or sustainability-related challenge they want to work on throughout the programme. Support is provided to define and refine this in the first session.

During the programme, we support you to develop a project proposal to help you address your challenge. Line managers are invited to attend part of the final session to hear brief presentations from participants on their proposals. We check in with participants a few months after the programme ends to support ongoing development.

Cost

The cost for taking part in the course is £195+VAT.
