Place-based Approaches

20 Minute Neighbourhoods

The principle of a 20 minute neighbourhood is a place-based approach to enable more local living and thereby support everybody’s choices to enhance wellbeing for our people and planet. The Place Programme supports local government and councils to progress Scottish Government's ambition for 20 minute neighbourhoods. This includes an Elected Member Briefing Note describing the key features of this ambition and its application across all of Scotland, from remote rural communities to cities and towns.

Community Wealth Building

Community wealth building is a place-based approach which like all approaches seeks to reduce inequality, specifically seeking to take a proactive approach to supporting local inclusive economics. The IS produced an elected member briefing note on community wealth building that sets out the key concepts and strategies, and points to other useful sources of information. The Planning Skills Programme at the IS held a webinar on Community Wealth Building and Planning Policy. North Ayrshire Council have recently adopted a Community Wealth Building Strategy.

Other place-based approaches

Examples of other place-based approaches being progressed in Scotland are:

  • Regeneration Capital Grant Funded projects
  • Participatory budgeting projects
  • Regional economic partnerships and developments such as the South of Scotland Enterprise Agency
