To the City: A Neurodivergent Adventure Arcade Machine

The Arcade Machine is an interactive gaming project co-designed by Borders Additional Needs Group (B.A.N.G) and Alchemy Film & Arts. This innovative initiative engages young people in conversations about the everyday experiences of neurodivergent young people. It demonstrates how our environments, public spaces and societal attitudes can either support or hinder the realisation of children’s human rights.

The game premiered at the Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival in May 2025.

Overview

The Arcade Machine is a portable gaming unit inspired by vintage arcade machines, featuring a video game where players must navigate decisions about everyday scenarios such as going to the cinema. Through the game, they demonstrate what everyday life can feel like for someone who is neurodivergent.

This project comes from a collaboration with B.A.N.G’s Branching Out Programme for 16-25-year-olds with additional support needs, showcasing community filmmaking and creative learning. Young participants built the game, incorporating their lived experiences to the design of characters and environments. The game highlights the challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals bringing visibility to their daily experiences. It promotes awareness of the rights of neurodivergent young people in an engaging and creative way.

The project will continue to tour schools and community events, offering more young people the opportunity to explore and interact with the game.
