Local authority funded money and welfare rights advice services – an insight from services leads and advisers

In 2021 the Improvement Service (IS) carried out additional research to supplement the findings of the Common Advice Performance Management Reporting Framework. This originated from discussions at the 2019/20 annual stakeholder workshop, where local authorities identified a range of areas they were interested in understanding further.

It was acknowledged that several changes have taken place within money and welfare rights advice services since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, therefore the IS sought to understand these changes from both services leads and advisers who have knowledge of this first-hand. The research aimed to highlight the breadth of work carried out within advice services and the impact this has.

Three main aims were set out for this research;

  • To provide a more detailed understanding of the support provided by local authority funded money and welfare rights advice services and what this achieves.
  • An understanding of how COVID-19 has impacted the work done by these services, including the impact on face to face service delivery.
  • An insight into how services are supporting clients with debt and preventing debt.

The findings of this research are summarised in the following report: Local authority funded money and welfare rights advice services - an insight from service leads and advisers.
