Understand Context

Before embarking on any project, you must ensure you understand the context and scope with which you will be carrying out analysis work. The BOSCARD mnemonic can be used as a tool to ensure help consider the context thoroughly.

You should ensure you confirm:

  • Background – reason for the project, key stakeholders etc.
  • Objectives – project objectives. What are you trying to achieve? Good objectives are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound).
  • Scope – ensure you define the project scope.
  • Constraints – consider any constraints or restrictions that limit or place conditions on the project.
  • Assumptions – consider all factors that, for planning purposes, are considered to be true before starting the project.
  • Risks – outline any risks identified and a quick assessment of each.
  • Deliverables – define what is going to be produced and the key deliverables from the analysis work.

Depending on the nature and size of the project, you can set out the context in a separate document. If the project is small, it may be sufficient to consider the context without separate documentation.
