What is it?
The BOSCARD mnemonic is a tool that can be used to help understand the context around the problem or project.
Why use this technique?
Before embarking on any service design project, you must ensure you understand the context and scope with which you will be carrying out analysis work.
What does this technique look like?
You should ensure you confirm:
- Background – reason for the service design project, key stakeholders etc.
- Objectives – What are you trying to achieve? Good objectives are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound).
- Scope – ensure you define the scope (including what is out of scope).
- Constraints – consider any constraints or restrictions that limit or place conditions on the service design project.
- Assumptions – consider all factors that, for planning purposes, are considered to be true before starting.
- Risks – outline any risks identified and a quick assessment of each.
- Deliverables – define what is going to be produced and the key deliverables from the analysis work.
Depending on the nature and size of the service design project, you can set out the context in a separate document. If the design project is small, it may be sufficient to consider the context without separate documentation.
Who is involved?
BOSCARD should be completed in conjunction with key stakeholders.
Skills required?
- Analytical thinking and forecasting are required to analyse the bigger picture of problem or opportunity area and plan ahead.
- Strong communication skills are required when working with a range of key stakeholders.
- Risk Management is key to ensuring all risks are highlighted and accounted for at project conception
- Scope Management

The Double Diamond (Design Council)
The Double Diamond is a visual representation of the design and innovation process. It’s a simple way to describe the steps taken in any design and innovation project, irrespective of methods and tools used.
